To whom it may concern,
My name is Joshua Langford and I am a native of Huntsville, Alabama. I have a strong passion to assist students through the different processes that they face. My heart’s desire is to mentor and help students achieve success inwardly as well as outwardly. I attended Michigan State University on a full-ride athletic basketball scholarship for my undergraduate tenure where I majored in Advertising Management and minored in Religious Studies. In addition to this, I am acquiring my graduate degree in Education with a concentration in Sports Coaching and Leadership which will be completed by August 19th of 2021.
My collegiate career has been a great picture of valleys and peaks both as a student and athlete. I immediately relay this message because ultimately at the foundation of any job there are going to be highs and lows. I believe if you do not have the resolve to withstand those, then skill does not matter. While at the same time, skill and resolve are a dynamic combination. I bring this fine balance to the table. Throughout my years of being on the men’s basketball team, I was selected by my teammates as well as my coaches to be a team captain for three consecutive years. This position helped me cultivate great skills in the areas of communication, listening, and leading. These skills are essential when it comes to being diplomatic and being able to work effectively with co-workers. Through playing basketball, I was able to play under a Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo. His methods of coaching assisted me in developing a keen eye and an analytical mind. This has trained me to pinpoint the steps that are needed to take to reach success and maintain success.I have accumulated recruiting skills through being a host liaison for athletes on unofficial and official visits.
By being a student at MSU, I have had the chance to experience students who are from all over, grow in literacy regarding social media and presentations, have first-hand knowledge of working effectively with diverse groups and campus personnel, recruitment experience, strong communication skills, and leadership abilities in a university setting. I have also grown competent in balancing multiple responsibilities at once by being a student and athlete. On the contrary, there may be a few other requirements that I may not meet, but I am willing to be teachable. I have learned that there will be moments when your knowledge or skill does not line up with what is needed. Landing in this place is inevitable when you are working within an entity that is constantly trying to become better. I am always in the mindset to learn and to apply that learning because it is essential. If I do not know how to do something, I will make sure to find out how to do something. I will not be afraid to ask for help.
My passion is to help the generations coming after me-for them to go further than what they could ever dream or imagine.
